Convert an existing detached garage into a home office
WP + ID, Yanglin Cai
We were tasked with the challenge of transforming an existing detached garage into a functional home office. The client is a private tutor of kids ranging in age from kindergarten all the way through high school, and works full time from her home. The main considerations were providing ample storage for school supplies and teaching material, as well as capturing as much daylight to maximize the feel of the space. Functionality was key, and additional measures were taken to ensure design duality with elements like cork board cabinets and chalk-board wall paint.
We aimed to pay homage to the mid-century design of the existing home, while adding new modern elements. The studio now relates to the existing home but holds its own dynamic presence. Construction included reinforcing the existing garage foundation and reframing the roof to ensure the bones were solid. Character is woven throughout with elements like the perforated roman brick wall and custom daybed, fit with bespoke cushions. Each material was carefully selected to work together and contribute to the overall aesthetic balance.
The end result is a functional space that ignites productivity with the help of harmonious surroundings.
